RoHS - EU Directive 2002/95/EC

RoHS 3 (EU Directive 2015/863) adds four new restricted substances -all phthalates. The four phthalates are mainly used as insulation plasticizers, and are on the REACH list of SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern). The expanded list for restricted substances in homogeneous materials for RoHS 3 is nowas follows:

  • Cadmium (0.01 %)
  • Lead (0.1 %)
  • Mercury (0.1 %)
  • Hexavalent chromium (0.1 %)
  • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) (0.1 %)
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) (0.1 %)
  • Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) (0.1 %)
  • Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) (0.1 %)
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) (0.1 %)
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) (0.1 %)

A list of exemptions for the use of the above substances in specific products is given in the Annex to the Directive. The Directive also allows for some product ‘usage’ exemptions, such as equipment used in the Military/Aerospace Industries.

Weald Electronics Limited

Many of the Weald Electronics products are not RoHS compliant as they are specifically manufactured for use in the Military/Aerospace Industries. However, RoHS compliant alternatives to the standard product ranges are available upon request. Weald Electronics Limited has a commitment to reducing hazardous substances wherever possible by the use of alternatives as and when they become available.

Lead - The use of lead in solder is now no longer used as standard. Weald connector contact terminations are now either pure Tin or Gold. However, many customers in the Mil/Aero Industries require Tin/Lead solders for specific applications and this may be accommodated upon request.

Mercury - Weald Electronics Limited does not use mercury in any of its product ranges.

Hexavalent Chromium – Drab Olive passivated Zinc Cobalt plating on the LMH connector range is RoHS compliant as standard. Drab Olive passivation on other connector ranges can be supplied as compliant upon request.

Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE), including Deca-BDE, and Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) – Weald products do not contain PBDEs or PBBs.

Phthalates. Weald products do not contain DEHP, BBP, DBP, or DIBP

Cadmium - Cadmium plated parts are not RoHS compliant. Alternative RoHS plating finishes to Cadmium are available from Weald Electronics Limited such as Zinc Cobalt, Nickel, etc
